Their 1940s house had everything – except a fresh scent.
The stale odor was impossible to get rid of, clinging to clothes, furniture, and decor.
"We tried Ozoneair, and now the house smells as if it were new," say Irene Lundqvist and Göran Lundgren.

The couple Irene Lundqvist and Göran Lundgren live in Vallentuna, but Irene also owns a 1940s house just outside Norberg in Västmanland. "I bought the house 12 years ago, and I've furnished it in an old-fashioned style that harmonizes with the house's character. Many pieces of furniture are old; some I inherited from my parents," she says.
The house is a permanent residence with all amenities. Irene and Göran stay there periodically, but sometimes it stands empty and locked up for several months.
"Every time we came to the house, we were met by a stale odor – a strong smell that clung to our clothes and hair, but also could settle in items, furniture, textiles, and other furnishings," says Göran.
They had the house inspected, but there was no mold damage. However, it has a concrete foundation, which tends to release moisture and odor into the building. "We tried 'everything' to get rid of the smell. Cleaning products, air purifiers, hot air fans in the basement. But nothing helped."
Ozone removes odors and mold spores
Göran received a tip that odors can be sanitized with ozone, a gas also known as "active oxygen." Behind the innovation is Ozoneair, a technology company in Luleå.
"The Ozoneair machine converts oxygen in the air into ozone, which attacks and neutralizes air molecules. Bad odors disappear, as do mold spores, bacteria, viruses, and other harmful microorganisms," says Johan Lundberg, founder of Ozoneair.
Just press a button
Using Ozoneair is very easy, Irene and Göran attest:
"The instruction manual is clear and available in Swedish. You place the machine in the middle of the room, plug it into an electrical outlet, and start it with a push of a button. Then you leave the house and let the machine work while you do other things. It's fully automatic and also easy to handle, weighing only a few kilos."
"Pure magic"
The couple started by placing the Ozoneair in the basement, where it worked for eight hours. Then they placed it on the ground floor in the middle of the house for another eight hours. A few weeks later, they repeated the treatment.
"The smell and the air feel completely different afterward: fresh, crisp, and clear! Now when we come here, it's like stepping into a new house; it smells as if it were newly built. It's pure magic," says Göran.
They opened cabinets, wardrobes, and drawers before the sanitization so that the ozone could freshen up clothes and textiles. "They smelled like freshly laundered afterward."
Your tip for people curious about sanitizing with ozone?
"Ozone is an established method for getting rid of stubborn odors, and we can warmly recommend Ozoneair. We're not very technical, but we've hardly encountered an easier machine. You can also use it for approximately 1000 treatments."
"Another tip is to sanitize with Ozoneair before selling if you're selling your house, car, or boat. A house freed from stale odors can increase in value by many hundreds of thousands."

Facts: Why the house smells stale
A stale odor is a common problem; the cause can be mold, but the house doesn't necessarily have to be mold-damaged. Summer houses that are closed up and cooled down during the winter months start to smell stuffy. Ventilation is limited, and humidity rises in all materials while bacteria thrive. The stale and stuffy smell often spreads and "settles" in walls, floors, and furnishings.
The odor can also come from older materials, such as wallboards and cork mats. Impregnation in the house's construction (especially from the 1960s and 1970s) smells a bit like mold, but more pungent. In a linoleum floor with damaged surface layers, moisture can penetrate, and the linseed oil can turn rancid; then a "vomit-like" smell rises when the floor has been scrubbed and dries. Moisture-damaged carpet glue can also smell stale.
Ozoneair effectively works against all these odors.
Here's where you can sanitize with Ozoneair
- The basement – ventilation is often poor, and there's a high risk of mold and moisture forming.
- The crawl space – moisture odor can spread and settle in walls and furnishings.
- In your home – odors often linger in furniture, textiles, and decor.
- The attic and storage room – these often smell stuffy as a result of moisture and poor ventilation.
- The bathroom and laundry room – drains, moisture, and poor ventilation can cause odors.
- The car – moisture, food residues, pets, motion sickness; a car often starts to smell bad.
- The holiday home, caravan, motorhome, boat – often stand empty for longer periods and therefore smell stuffy and often stale.
