Guide: Things to consider before buying an ozone generator

Guide: Tänk på det här innan du köper en ozongenerator

Are you considering buying an ozone generator to purify the air and get rid of bad odors?
There are various ozone generators on the market. But how do they differ – and what determines whether an ozone generator delivers good results and is safe to use?
Here is your guide before you buy.

Ozone generators – how they differ from air purifiers

First of all: Many confuse an ozone generator with an air purifier, but they are two completely different products.

– An air purifier usually has a filter to capture particles (from, for example, pollen or air pollution), and it must be on continuously to purify the air.

– You use an ozone generator on isolated occasions. It sanitizes odors in a room or other space using ozone gas. The Ozoneair ozone generator removes bad odors, mold spores, bacteria, allergens, and other harmful microorganisms in a few hours. It also eliminates odors that have settled in surfaces and materials. You get rid of stubborn odors like mold, smoke, and urine smells.

– Usually one treatment is enough, but sometimes you may need to repeat the treatment once or twice, says Johan Lundberg, founder of Ozoneair, a technology company in Luleå.

Ozoneair is a proven Swedish ozone generator that has sold more than 40,000 units in large parts of the world. The Ozoneair ozone generator comes with a 5-year warranty.

How does ozone, disseminated by an ozone generator, work?

Ozone is a gas called active oxygen. The molecule consists of three oxygen atoms and is a strong oxidizing agent. When ozone comes into contact with the molecules that cause bad odor, these are oxidized by the ozone – and all odors disappear. The ozone also destroys the cell walls of bacteria and mold spores, preventing them from reproducing.

Ozone molecules that do not oxidize naturally decompose into ordinary oxygen. After a treatment, no ozone remains in the sanitized space.

How does the ozone generator produce ozone?

It is important to pay attention to how ozone is produced in the ozone generator. Some generators are effective but can produce byproducts that can be harmful to health.

An ozone generator converts oxygen (O2) into ozone (O3) using a corona discharge. The oxygen passes through an electric field and becomes ozone.

But: There are two types of corona discharges used in ozone generators – high-frequency and low-frequency.

A high-frequency corona discharge can form harmful byproducts, such as sulfuric acid and nitrogen oxide, which are hazardous to health in sufficiently large quantities. The byproducts can also damage materials in the sanitized space.

Why the Ozoneair ozone generator is safe to use

Ozoneair instead uses a low-frequency corona discharge that does not form harmful byproducts, making it significantly safer and easier to handle.

– Thanks to unique technology, Ozoneair uses a very large surface for weaker discharges. In this way, pure ozone is produced without byproducts. This also leads to other advantages for the ozone generator, such as a longer lifespan and more stable function, explains Johan Lundberg.

Disseminating the right amount of ozone for the right amount of time is key to a good result. It is also crucial to avoid damage to plastic, rubber, electronics, and other materials.

How the Ozoneair ozone generator works

The Ozoneair ozone generator uses unique and proprietary control technology that optimally adjusts the amount of ozone. It operates in oscillating intervals, meaning the intensity varies when it disseminates ozone. This ensures even ozone distribution throughout the space and allows the gas to work deeply.

– Ozoneair is fully automatic and calculates the best treatment time and correct ozone levels based on the space to be treated. This maximizes the effect while eliminating the risk of damage. Ozoneair has been test-run for thousands of hours to ensure that it cannot damage any material, says Johan Lundberg.

The ozone generator can be used for 1000 treatments

You don't need any prior knowledge to sanitize with the Ozoneair ozone generator. You place your Ozoneair – which is easy to handle and weighs only a few kilograms – in the middle of the room to be sanitized, and connect it to an electrical outlet. Using a dial on the ozone generator, you set the room size in square meters. The treatment time will then be displayed. You press start, the ozone generator starts beeping, and you can then leave the room. While the machine is working, you can do other things. Return two hours after the treatment is completed. By then, all ozone molecules will have decomposed into ordinary oxygen, and the bad odors will have been replaced by a fresh and clean scent. You can use your Ozoneair for approximately 1000 treatments and then refill it.
