How to get rid of basement odor in a few hours

Så blir du av med dålig lukt i källaren på några timmar

It's common for basements to suffer from damp and mould. The musty smell takes hold of everything from walls to belongings and spreads throughout the house.
The Swedish product Ozoneair removes odours with ozone.
– It was super easy, just press a button, say Irene Lundqvist and Göran Lundgren, who sanitised their basement.

Many homeowners who go down to the basement are met with a pungent and sometimes acrid smell reminiscent of a damp root cellar. And it's not surprising. Basements often have poorer ventilation and heating than the rest of the house, which means an increased risk of damp and mould growth.

But the smell can also come from old materials in the house, such as wallboards and cork carpets, or impregnation in the house's construction.

The smell settles in the floors and walls, spreads to belongings and other items stored in the basement, and can make its way up into the house.

Ozone – a strong oxidant

But with the Swedish product Ozoneair, you can sanitise the basement and get rid of the odours. The machine is fully automatic and converts oxygen in the air (O2) into ozone (O3).

– Ozone is an effective oxidising agent that attacks and neutralises the molecules of the odour source. The ozone also penetrates surfaces and materials that are being deodorised. Bad odours disappear immediately, as do mould spores, bacteria, allergens and other harmful microorganisms. After sanitisation, the ozone molecules break down into regular oxygen, explains Johan Lundberg, founder of Ozoneair, a technology company in Luleå.

Tried "everything" – air purifiers and fans

Irene Lundqvist and Göran Lundgren have a house from the 1940s just outside Norberg in Västmanland.

– The house was characterised by a musty smell that settled in clothes and hair, but also in belongings, furniture and other furnishings, says Irene.

They have had the house inspected, but it has no mould damage. However, it has a concrete foundation that releases moisture into the building.

– We tried "everything" to get rid of the smell. Cleaning products, air purifiers, hot fans in the basement. But nothing helped.

Then they heard about ozone sanitisation and got an Ozoneair.
– We started by sanitising the basement for eight hours. The bad smell disappeared immediately. Then the machine worked upstairs in the house for eight hours.

"Hardly been simpler machine"

They are very satisfied:

– The smell and the air feel completely different now – fresh, clean and clear! It's like stepping into a new house, it smells as if it were newly built. It's pure magic, says Göran.

Using Ozoneair was very easy, the couple confirms:
– We are not very technical, but we have hardly encountered a simpler machine. The instruction manual is clear and in Swedish. You place the machine in the middle of the room, connect it to an electrical outlet and start it with the push of a button, says Göran and continues:

– Then you leave the house and let the machine do its work. The machine is easy to handle, it only weighs a few kilos. You can also use it for about 1000 treatments.

Advice: Investigate if the basement is mould-affected

Ozone kills mould spores in the air but also mould spores superficially in materials.
– Our advice to families who suspect mould is to first investigate if the space is mould-infested. Then you may need to address the cause, for example with a dehumidifier. But even if you have done that, mould smell usually remains – a smell that Ozoneair effectively removes, says Johan Lundberg.

Ozone – a super molecule that purifies water and removes smoke smell

  • Ozone is a gas, the molecule consists of three oxygen atoms. It is used, among other things, for bleaching textiles and paper pulp, as well as disinfecting laundry in healthcare.
  • In many parts of the world, drinking water is purified with ozone, which removes mould spores, bacteria and other microorganisms.
  • Sanitation companies use ozone to remove severe odours such as mould smell, tobacco smell and fire smell.
