Ozone technology has long been used to purify water and to kill bacteria and viruses in textiles in healthcare. Since the 1970s, remediation companies have used ozone to sanitize homes and premises from fire smoke, tobacco smoke, mold odors, and other smells.

With the Swedish innovation Ozoneair, private individuals can de-odorize their homes with ozone, without any prior knowledge.
– We launched the product in earnest in the spring of 2018, and it sold out immediately, says Johan Lundberg, founder of Ozoneair, a technology company based in Luleå.

Today, over 37,000 units of the machine have been sold.

But how does cleaning with ozone work?
– Ozoneair converts oxygen in the air into ozone, which attacks and eliminates all odors. Even mold spores, allergens, bacteria, and other harmful microorganisms are killed, explains Johan Lundberg.

Ozone is a reactive gas, also known as active oxygen. It penetrates into nooks and crannies and superficially into materials such as textiles, furniture, floors, and walls.

Guide: Sanitize with ozone – step by step

  • Move flowers and other plants out of the room to be sanitized. Open doors to cabinets where you store clothes, textiles, and anything else you want to be freshened up by the ozone. Place out other items you want to sanitize, such as sweaty sports gear or a mattress that smells bad. Close windows and doors.
  • Connect Ozoneair to a standard power outlet and set the room's area using a knob. Then press the start button.
  • The machine is fully automatic. While it is working – usually 2-6 hours – you should not be in the room. Pets are also not allowed in the room as inhaling ozone is harmful.
  • Two hours after the operation is complete, you can re-enter the room. By then, all ozone molecules will have broken down into ordinary oxygen. Air out, there may be a slight smell from the ozone treatment afterwards, but it will disappear with ventilation.
  • Repeat the same procedure in the next room. Sometimes it may be necessary to repeat the treatment a few times.

Use ozone safely. Always read the instruction manual and product information before use.
