It's time to take the boat up for its winter rest.
Sanitize the boat with the Swedish product Ozoneair – and reduce the risk of mold and bad odors forming during winter.
– The musty smell completely disappeared from both the cabin and cushions, says Janne Lyhre, who sanitized his 1983 boat.
Boats are a breeding ground for moisture and mold. Spaces are small and ventilation is often poor – and during winter, moisture rises in all materials when the boat sits in the cold.
– Mold makes the boat start to smell musty. It's bad for health and also lowers the boat's resale value, says Johan Lundberg, founder of Ozoneair, a tech company in Luleå.
Risk of mold growth this winter
– There's a high risk that mold spores, which may already be in the boat, will multiply during winter when the boat is covered. The mold smell – perhaps combined with residual fuel odor – settles into cushions and other interiors.
With the easy-to-use Ozoneair machine, you can sanitize your boat with ozone.
– Ozone is an effective oxidizing agent that attacks and neutralizes odor molecules. Ozone also penetrates surfaces and materials that are being deodorized. Bad odors disappear, as do mold spores, bacteria, allergens, and other harmful microorganisms. After sanitation, the ozone molecules break down into regular oxygen, explains Johan Lundberg.
”Super easy to use”
Janne Lyhre and Malin Olsson's boat can accommodate six people; it almost functions as the family's summer cottage. The couple typically spends about 25-30 nights each summer on the boat in the Luleå archipelago. But the 1983 boat – which Janne bought seven years ago – has been characterized by a strong smell.
– The smell is hard to describe, but anyone with a boat probably understands what I mean. An older boat that sits outside during winter and gets damp – a sharp, musty smell permeates the entire boat and even the interior. The cushions smelled of mold.
What have you done to get rid of the smell?
– We've tried most things regarding various cleaning products. Scrubbed and scoured. But nothing has helped.
A few weeks ago, Janne tried Ozoneair. The machine, which only weighs a few kilos, is fully automatic and easy to use. Over 37,000 units have been sold since its launch just over two years ago.
– You plug Ozoneair into an electrical outlet, place it in the boat, and press a button. That's all. Then it works for a few hours.
”Like a brand new boat”
– I was actually surprised – after the sanitation, it was like a brand new boat! It smells fresh and clean. The smell has also disappeared from the upholstery and cushions. An incredibly simple and effective machine that I can strongly recommend to anyone who wants to get rid of bad odors, says Janne Lyhre.
You can use your Ozoneair for approximately 1000 treatments.
– Our plan is to sanitize with Ozoneair every spring and autumn to keep the boat free from odors and mold growth, says Janne Lyhre.
Here you can sanitize with Ozoneair
- The basement – ventilation is often poor, and there's a high risk of mold and moisture forming.
- The crawl space – moisture smell can spread and settle into walls and furniture.
- In your home – odors often linger in furniture, textiles, and decor.
- The attic and storage room – these often smell stale as a result of dampness and poor ventilation.
- The bathroom and laundry room – drains, moisture, and poor ventilation can cause odors.
- The car – moisture, food residues, pets, motion sickness; a car often starts to smell bad.
- The holiday home, caravan, motorhome, boat – often stand empty for extended periods and therefore smell stale and often musty.
Use ozone safely. Always read the instruction manual and product information before use.
