Second-hand tip: How to remove odor from clothes

Second hand-tipset: Så får du bort lukten från kläderna

Buying second-hand is more popular than perhaps ever before.
But sometimes, that lovely garment or stylish piece of furniture has an unpleasant smell – it might smell of tobacco, dust, or simply musty.
Now you can freshen up your find in just a few hours, with the help of ozone.

The second-hand market is growing steadily. In Sweden, second-hand chains are primarily run by non-profit organizations. The five largest – including Myrorna and Stadsmissionen – had a combined turnover of 1.5 billion SEK in 2019 across their 400 stores.

"Cheap, environmentally friendly – and unhygienic"

This includes everything from clothes and textiles to furniture and household goods.

However, one deterrent to second-hand shopping can be hygiene – some find it unappealing, especially with textiles, cushions, and clothes that others have lived with.

A study from Karlstad University investigated attitudes towards second-hand clothing. When respondents were asked to describe used clothes with a single word, "cheap" topped the list, followed by "environmentally friendly" and "unhygienic."

Fully automatic machine

Today, you can freshen up your find – with ozone. The Swedish innovation Ozoneair is an easy-to-use and fully automatic machine weighing 2.9-6.3 kilograms (depending on the size chosen).

It converts the oxygen in the air into ozone gas, which removes odors, bacteria, and other microorganisms. The gas is highly oxidizing and therefore sanitizes extremely effectively.

Johan Lundberg, founder of Luleå-based company Ozoneair, explains:
– Ozone gas breaks down the carbon chains that bad odors are made of, both in the air and in materials. The gas penetrates into nooks and crannies, textiles, furniture, and other materials – eliminating odors, mold spores, bacteria, and dust mites. At the same time, the cleaning is gentle on all materials, thanks to Ozoneair's unique technology.

How to sanitize your second-hand find

Many use Ozoneair to remove odors in their entire home, car, or holiday cottage – this can include musty odors, smoke odors, pet odors, or mold odors.

But you can also sanitize your items – for example, your second-hand finds.
– You connect Ozoneair to a standard power outlet and set the room size. Place the items you want to sanitize in the same room. For example, you can hang clothes and textiles on a drying rack. Close windows and doors and start the machine; you should not be in the room while it is operating.

Ozone technology has long been used to purify water and kill bacteria and viruses in textiles in healthcare. Since the 1970s, sanitation companies have used ozone to sanitize homes, premises, and furnishings from fire smoke, tobacco smoke, mold, and other odors.

Swedish invention that sold out

With the Swedish innovation Ozoneair, private individuals can sanitize their homes with ozone without any prior knowledge.
– We seriously launched the product in the spring of 2018, and it sold out immediately, says Johan Lundberg of Ozoneair.

Today, over 35,000 units of the machine have been sold.

The moldy smell from the cushions disappeared

Morgan Jakobsson, Glanshammar in Örebro municipality:

"We bought a used motorboat with two sleeping compartments. It had been outside and the cushions were moldy. It reeked of a musty and moldy root cellar, making it hard to breathe. I bought the smallest model, Ozoneair Go, which worked in the boat for two hours. A few days later, I spread all the cushions in the cabin and ran it for another two hours to treat the cushions separately. Absolutely fantastic. Both the cushions and the boat smell new and fresh after the sanitation."

Blankets, carpets, and pillows no longer smell of dog

Kerstin Dahlberg and Anders Karnbrink, Hålanda:

"We run a dog and cat boarding facility and clean thoroughly regularly, but the animal smell doesn't completely go away with traditional cleaning. Dog odor, especially, settles in blankets and other textiles. We have now tried Ozoneair, and afterwards, our rooms smell clean, and all textiles have a neutral scent – the dog smell is gone. We can highly recommend Ozoneair for anyone who wants to sanitize their textiles from odors."
