Musty, earthy, pungent – or simply vaguely foul-smelling?

Anyone who has lived with "summer cottage smell" knows how it feels. You can get used to it, but you can still smell it on your clothes when you leave the cottage.

Successful product that cleans with ozone

Regardless of what causes the odors, there is an innovation from Luleå that removes all smells using ozone gas.
– The Ozoneair machine is easy to use and 100 percent environmentally friendly, says Johan Lundberg, founder of Ozoneair, a technology company in Luleå that developed the product.

Ozoneair converts oxygen in the air into ozone, so-called active oxygen. The ozone molecule is chemically aggressive and penetrates into every nook and cranny, textiles, and furniture that would otherwise be difficult to clean mechanically.

“One treatment is usually enough”

– All odor-causing molecules are destroyed and disappear. One treatment is usually enough. Ozoneair, which is fully automatic, runs for a few hours in the room. Then you move the machine to the next room, explains Johan Lundberg.

So what can cause the summer cottage smell?

Here are the most common causes:

• Moisture and mold. If the house is mold-damaged, you should investigate the cause and fix it. But even if you do – for example, re-drain – a musty smell usually lingers indoors. Ozoneair removes that smell. The machine eliminates all mold spores and mold odors in the treated room.

• Winter hibernation. Summer houses that are closed up and cooled down during the winter months start to smell stale. Ventilation is limited, and humidity rises in all materials: floors, walls, ceilings, furniture, textiles, and other furnishings. Bacteria can thrive. The musty and stale smell often spreads and "settles" in the house. A few days after a thorough cleaning, the smell usually returns. The Ozoneair product removes this smell and is perfect to use at the beginning of the summer cottage season.

• Materials in old houses. If your summer house is old, it doesn't have to be moisture-damaged to smell musty. It could be older materials, such as wallboards and linoleum, that cause the odors. Impregnation in the house's construction (especially from the 1960s and 1970s) smells a bit like mold, but more pungent. In a linoleum floor with damaged surface, moisture can penetrate and the linseed oil can turn rancid – then a "vomit-like" smell rises when you've scrubbed the floor and it dries. Moisture-damaged carpet glue can also smell musty. Ozoneair effectively works against all these smells.

• Animals. In houses with crawl spaces or traditional foundations, mice, rats, badgers, and other small animals can find their way in, perhaps to warm themselves in the insulation of the floor joists. Urine or cadaver smell can spread throughout the house. If you cannot demolish walls and floors, a treatment with Ozoneair can purify the air from these bothersome odors.

• Crawl space. In houses built on a crawl space or traditional foundation, an earthy musty smell can spread. Here you can read about the Nilsson couple who got rid of the earthy smell in their house with the help of Ozoneair.

"The smell disappeared and has not returned"

Johan Lundberg, founder of Ozoneair, says that it was precisely the "summer cottage smell" in his family's summer house in Norrbotten that inspired him to develop the product:

– It was frustrating that it was impossible to get rid of the smell. We tried for many years with different cleaning agents, but nothing worked.

The prototype, which would later become Ozoneair, was tested in Lundberg's summer house, with good results:
– The smell disappeared and has not returned.

Ozoneair is today a success both in Sweden and abroad, and is used in 14 different countries.

3 common questions about Ozoneair

Will I get rid of the smells for good?
Yes, Ozoneair removes bad odors permanently. However, to get rid of mold smell, you must also eliminate the moisture that is the breeding ground for mold. Otherwise, there is a risk that the mold smell will return over time.

How do I use Ozoneair?
•
You place your Ozoneair in the room/space to be sanitized and connect the appliance to a standard power outlet.
• You set the size of the room/space using a knob – and press start.
• The machine is fully automatic: it calculates the optimal cleaning time for the best results itself. The machine finishes its work after a few hours. One treatment is usually enough, but sometimes two may be needed.
• While the machine is working, you should not be in the room; you should not inhale ozone as it is harmful to health. To be safe, wait two hours after the operation is complete before re-entering the treated room. By then, all ozone molecules are guaranteed to be gone.
• You can use your Ozoneair for approximately 1000 treatments.

What odors can Ozoneair remove?
