Midsummer is here and the period of decay is approaching. During the summer, more scents are in circulation than in the middle of a cold winter.

Here are 7 things you might not have known about our sense of smell.

1. You have a personal scent. We all emit a body odor consisting of 100-150 chemicals, which is influenced by what we eat and our hygiene, among other things. But we also have odor molecules that remain the same throughout life: a genetic "code" that smells.

2. Your sense of smell can be trained. Do you dream of becoming a perfumer or sommelier? Start practicing; your sense of smell is like a muscle you can train and improve.

3. We sniff our way to our partner. Studies have shown that we prefer the scent of a person with an immune system that differs maximally from our own. This is optimal for having healthy children.

4. We "see" scents. In blind tests of the approximately one hundred most common odorants, people usually get less than half correct. In other words, we need to see what we're smelling to understand what it is.

5. Women are more sensitive to scents. Generally, women have a stronger sense of smell than men. Studies show that women are better at detecting a scent, identifying it, and remembering it. Researchers believe this is linked to women having better "verbal memory" and a greater interest in scents. Another theory is that evolution created gender differences so that women can recognize the scent of their child and ensure that their children's food is not poisonous.

6. Your perfume smells different in the summer. The heat and higher body temperature make the perfume smell more. The lighter top notes evaporate faster, and the base notes – which like warmth – become more prominent.

7. Our sense of smell is underestimated. Elephants can smell water from over 20 kilometers away, so we're lagging behind there. But it's a myth that we're always worse than animals at smelling. We are better at detecting fruity and sweet scents than, for example, dogs. Humans have about 20 million sensory cells in the nose and can register between 10,000 and 40,000 scents.
